Enveloped in unusual tranquillity, the village of Zheravna is located in a green valley amidst the wooded slopes of the eastern Balkan Range. Emerging at the beginning of the Ottoman rule, it gained the status and prerogatives of a soldier’s village. In the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the livelihood of the local population, sheep breeding, and handicrafts, was highly profitable. This reflected on the appearance of the village, which has been preserved until the present.

The older houses have only one storey, but a second storey was added later. The living quarters are surrounded by a terrace. The storerooms and hiding places are behind them. The interior of Zheravna house is an exceptional achievement in the Bulgarian "rural home". Furnishings are simple but exude coziness and great warmth. The aesthetic sense of the Bulgarian triumphs here. The built-in cupboards, ceilings, and doors, decorated with rosettes and stylized depictions, harmonize with the hand-woven carpets, covers, and cushions made by the locals.

The houses of Sava Filaterov, Hadji Draganov, Roussi Chorbadji, as well as the home of the great Bulgarian writer Yordan Yovkov, are fine examples of the typical Zheravna house. Having preserved the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival, Zheravna is a real vision of fairy tale and legend.
