Tsarevets is a mediaeval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo. It served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's primary fortress and strongest bulwark from 1185 to 1393 when it was conquered by the Ottomans. In the core of the complex the royal and the patriarchal palaces are located. The restoration of Tsarevets began in 1930 and was completed in 1981 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the Bulgarian state so the place become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bulgaria. |
