Preobrazhenski Monastery is beautifully located in the valley of Yantra River, 7 km north of Veliko Tarnovo. It is among the mediaeval Bulgarian monasteries established in 13th-14th century in the roundabouts of the capital city of the Second Bulgarian empire – initially as a cloister of the Vatoped monastery on mount Athos. In 1360 it gained special document for its independent status.

After Tarnovo was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in the end of 14th century, the monastery was sacked and burned on several occasions and totally destroyed. In 1825 it was restored at its present-day place from the father Zotik, monk from the Rila Monastery. The construction of the main temple started in 1834 under the directions of the master builder Dimitar Sofianliyata (that means "from Sofia"). Because he was hanged by the Turks next year, after an unsuccessful revolt of the population from Tarnovo region, the temple was completed following projects of the best Bulgarian 19th century architect – Kolyu Ficheto. The interior was adorned with magnificent murals in the middle of the century – once again by the best Bulgarian master, Zahari Zograf. In the church, you can see his autograph under the fresco representing the Transfiguration of Christ, and not only that. He has created his self-portrait here. Especially rare and fascinating is the cycle "Circle of life".

Around the main church, there is an ensemble of buildings resembling mediaeval fortress.
