Area and Location
Pamporovo is a modern ski resort in the heart of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. It is situated on 1650 m above the sea level at the foot of Mount Snezhanka (1962 m). It is 260 km away from Sofia and 85 km from Plovdiv. The resort is located in a region famous for its unique folklore traditions within 260 km of Sofia and 85 km of Bulgaria’s second largest city, Plovdiv. Pamporovo is the sunniest Bulgarian mountain resort with wonderful snow throughout the whole season. The specific combination of natural conditions makes the resort beautiful in winter as well as in summer. Pamporovo is a ski-centre for all categories of skiers; it has excellent ski runs including even a racing ski run for giant slalom, as well as a first class built-up ski lift system. The climate of Pamporovo is an exclusive one, featuring a soft winter with an average of 120 sunny days and extensive snow, while the snow cover reaches a thickness of 1.4 meters. Pamporovo is under the significant meteorological influence of the Aegean Sea with a skiing season from mid-December to mid-April. Average air temperature during January, the coldest month of the year, is minus 3oC, while the negative ionization of the crystal clear air is both a major longevity factor and a bulwark against winter colds. Also an inviting destination in summer, Pamporovo offers mountain bike trails, hiking and horse back trekking, not to mention shopping and massages! The biggest event of the year is the Rozhen Folk Festival, held in late August between Pamporovo and Progled. Skiing Conditions All the ski runs in Pamporovo are safe guarded and maintained in a very good condition. The ski runs in Pamporovo come in all hardship levels. They are located between 1926 and 1450 m above the sea level on the northern, eastern and western slopes of Snezhanka Peak. The most difficult ski run is "The Wall". All major ski runs start from Snezhanka Peak, where the TV tower is located. Otherwise, there is an international slalom course, snowboarding and cross-country trails – 25 km long. The total number of lifts is 14 with an uphill capacity per hour of 15 000 people.Great off-piste skiing and snowboarding is available in this resort, however using a local guide when going off-piste is recommended. The ski school is known internationally for its experienced instructors, who are more than 100 and are very high qualified. They will teach the beginners in groups or individually 2 to 4 hours daily. The duration of the different skiing classes is between 3 and 12 days. All course graduates will get a certificate.
Surrounding Areas Good roads make every settlement and beauty spot accessible from Pamporovo. Plovdiv offers plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and leisure activities. The nearby town of Smolyan with its Planetarium and ethnographic complexes is also worth visiting. Sofia and Bachkovo Monastery are of great interest too and can be visited on a day – trip from Pamporovo. The ethnographic reserve Shiroka Laka is situated 11 km from the resort.
