The National Museum of History was established on 5th May 1973 by Decree No. 90 of the Council of Ministers. On 2 March 1984, in honour of the 1300-th anniversary of the Bulgarian State, the new representative exhibition was inaugurated in the former building of the Court of Justice. Since the year 2000 the museum is situated in the most representative building of "Boyana" residential complex. The Museum is one of the largest history museums on the Balkans with 650.000 objects and the largest archaeological and historical archive. Its collections contain material remains from ancient and mediaeval cultures in the Bulgarian lands. Selected from the collections: Thracian and Bulgarian golden and silver treasures, rich collection of icons, church plates and cloths, numismatics and sphragistics, manuscript and old printed books, ethnographic materials.
