The National Art Gallery contains a collection of over 12 000 works of art, the oldest of which dating from the 18th century. Here stand the names of the most eminent representatives of Bulgarian pictorial art who worked immediately after the liberation from the Ottoman domination such as Veshin, Mrkvichka, Anton Mitov, Nikolai Pavlovich, and Georgi Danchov. The twenties are also represented in this collection, as well as the militant and socially committed pictures of the artists of the thirties who represented the native art movement. The pictures are grouped in: Mediaeval and Revival Christian art – the Crypt of the temple-monument St. Alexander Nevski, New Bulgarian Art and Modern Bulgarian Art.
