The National Archaeological Museum is located in the building of the former mosque Buyuk Camii that was constructed in the XV c. during the time of the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II. Between 1880 and 1893 it was a National Library and in 1893 the National Museum was established. It was officially opened in 1905 but only after 1948 it became an independent archaelogical institution. 
     Now the museum consists of several collections. First is the Prehistory Hall where you can see many findings from Paleolithic, Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Then you will be able to admire some of the interesting treasures dated back to the period between the late Bronze Age and late Antiquity, including the famous Valchetran and Lukovit ones. The Main Hall hosts collection of items connected with ancient Thrace, Greece and Rome. The second floor of the building is occupied by the Mediaeval Section where some books, woodwork, drawings, metal objects are presented.
