The Museum of Socialist Art was opened in September 2011. The museum is an affiliate of the National Art Gallery. It collects, preserves and displays examples of art from Bulgaria's 1944 to 1989 communist era. More than 150 exhibits are on display, including 60 paintings. It includes an open-air sculpture park, which features - among other items - a 45-ton statue of Lenin, that used to stand in the central Sofia spot now occupied by a statue of St. Sophia. Visitors may also see the five-pointed red star that used to be atop the Party House. The museum also has a video room showing documentaries from the communist era.
