Glozhene Monastery is among the most interesting Balkan monasteries, situated just 10 km from Glozhene village. Unlike most of the holy places in this region, the monastery is not nested among the ridges – it is located straight on top of the highest cliff, on the eastern side of which deep ravine plunges into the river valley. Glozhene Monastery has been found in the 13th century, destroyed and once again found in the 15th-16th century. Pilgrims gathered here from Bucharest, Foksani, Krayova in Romania. In the 19th century the complex became most important cultural centre of the neighboring region. Unfortunately it was strongly damaged in the earthquakes in 1904 and 1913. The present-day temple has been built in 1931. Inside it is preserved the miraculous icon of St. George presented to the monastery from its founder – the Russian prince Glozh. |
