Fortress Ovech was originally built only as a defense facility but quickly turned into a relatively large settlement. In different periods, it was inhabited by Thracians, Romans, Jews. It was conquered by knights, Turks, and Russians. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom Ovech is already an important administrative and military center, and one of the seven seats of bishops. In fact, in any takeover of Varna Ovech was the main barrier on the road to Pliska, Preslav, and Tarnovo.
