Basarbovo Monastery is the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria. Located in the valley of Rusenski Lom River, it is located only 10 km southwest of Ruse. In 1978 it was declared monument of culture. Its patron is St. Dimitar Basarbovski – popular local Bulgarian saint, monk, anchoret and abbot of the holy place, whose relics are nowadays placed in Bucharest, in the patriarchal cathedral "St. Constantine and Helena". The complex looks as if brought out of a fairytale – the belfry rises directly from the rocks on a steep slope, while the church and the cells are carved in the sandstones. Its decorations are uncomparable – especially because unlike other such places in Bulgaria, this one is a living centre of orthodox faith.
